Top things to do in Tirana

Skanderbeg Square

At the heart of Tirana lies Skanderbeg Square, a massive plaza surrounded by important landmarks such as the National History Museum, Et’hem Bey Mosque, and the Clock Tower. It’s the perfect starting point to learn about Albania’s history and experience the city’s pulse.

Bunk’Art Museums

Tirana’s unique history comes alive at Bunk’Art 1 and Bunk’Art 2, two underground museums housed in Cold War-era bunkers. These immersive exhibits offer insight into Albania’s communist past through art, artifacts, and multimedia displays.

National Art Gallery

Art lovers will enjoy the National Art Gallery, home to a rich collection of Albanian art spanning centuries, including thought-provoking socialist realism pieces from the communist period.

Discover Pazari i Ri

Tirana’s Grand Park

Relax in Tirana’s Grand Park, a lush green space featuring walking trails, a lake, cafes, and the Presidential Palace. It’s a favorite spot for locals to unwind and enjoy nature within the city.

Tirana Pyramid

One of the city’s most recognizable structures, the Pyramid of Tirana is a remnant of the communist era. Currently being renovated, it’s set to become a modern cultural hub — blending the city’s past and future. It is worth climbing up to take in the views. It is a popular place to watch sunset!

See “The Cloud”

This art instillation is all white geometric art designed by Sou Fujimoto. It is about 350 square meters and has two entrances. There are stepped terraces and internal area. It is incredible to explore and climb.

Visit the Orthodox Church of Tirana

The Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral of Tirana was completed in 2012 and is now the third largest Orthodox church in Europe. It was closed in 1967 under the communist regime and was reestablished as a church after the fall of communism. The cathedral complex includes a chapel, bell tower, museum and library.

Eating and Drinking in Tirana

Tirana is a huge city with incredible drinking and dining options. Don’t leave Tirana without tasting tavë kosi (baked lamb with yogurt), byrek (savory pie), or petulla (Albanian fritters). Pair your meal with local wine or raki, Albania’s traditional spirit.

Take in the views

For panoramic views of the city and surrounding mountains, ride the Dajti Express Cable Car to Mount Dajti National Park. At the top, enjoy hiking, paragliding, or dining with a stunning view of Tirana below. Other options are some incredible rooftop restaurants and bars around the city including Sky Club, The Crown Rooftop and Dining, LIFT Steak and Rooftop Bar and Salt. 

Take a Day trip from Tirana

Tirana is an excellent base for several incredible day tours. From Tirana, my friends and I took several amazing day trips including Bovilla Lakes hiking tour and Lake Koman and Shala River tour. We also did a day tour into North Macedonia to Lake Ohrid. There are several other options including Krujë Castle, Berat (the “city of a thousand windows”), or the Adriatic beaches of Durrës. You can easily base your entire stay in Tirana with day tours.

If you haven’t made it to Albania yet, consider this your inspiration to go. It is beyond beautiful and you will not be disappointed. Tirana was just a part of our epic itinerary but definitely a place to visit. You could also hit the highlights in one day. You will love this still hidden gem in Europe!
