Day Trip from Albania to North Macedonia

One Day Trip to North Macedonia

Ohrid, North Macedonia is one of the most enchanting destinations in the Balkans, known for its ancient churches, crystal-clear lake, and laid-back charm. If you are visiting neighboring country of Albania you can visit North Macedonia on a day tour from Tirana, Albania.  While it makes for a long day, going to North Macedonia from Tirana is a great day tour and a way to visit a new country.

Tirana, Albania

Pick up

We did a tour that picked us up in Tirana, Albania with the plan to go to North Macedonia. Once the tour knows your general location it gave a pick up location big enough for the bus so we had to walk 2 blocks- no biggie. It is a long day tour so the pick up is early!

Crossing the Border

When on a bus tour the guide took everyone’s passport and brought it to the passport agent while we waited on the bus. If you are EU citizen you won’t receive a passport stamp but elsewhere will. We never left the bus and the guide gave us back our passports. This is probably more involved if you are not a part of a day tour that plans to leave the same day. The route we took was clockwise around the lake. We crossed north of Lake Ohrid on A2.

North Macedonia

First views of Lake Ohird

Lake Ohrid is absolutely stunning and after crossing the border you travel around it to get to Ohrid for exploration. After the border is another 35 minute drive. After arrival we disembarked from the bus and our tour guide left us with a local tour guide to do a walking tour or Ohrid and then free time for lunch

Church of St. Sophia

One of North Macedonia’s most important medieval monuments, the Church of St. Sophia dates back to the 11th century. Inside, you’ll find remarkable Byzantine frescoes that reflect Ohrid’s historical role as a major religious center.

Visit Samuel’s Fortress

For panoramic views of Ohrid and the lake, climb up to Samuel’s Fortress. The walk is rewarding, and the views from the top stretch across the red rooftops of the Old Town and far into Albania on clear days.

Try Traditional Macedonian Food

Don’t leave Ohrid without sampling local dishes such as tavče gravče, grilled trout from Lake Ohrid, and shopska salad. Pair your meal with a glass of Macedonian wine or rakija at a lakeside restaurant.

Visit the Bay of Bones Museum

Located just outside Ohrid, the Bay of Bones is a fascinating open-air museum built over the lake, recreating a prehistoric stilt settlement. It’s a unique stop that combines history with beautiful lake views

Visit St. Naum Monastery

Visitors can explore the richly decorated church, admire colorful frescoes, and enjoy panoramic views of Lake Ohrid. Peacocks freely roam the grounds, adding to the charm of the setting.

Take in the views

There are views all around and the lake is so stunning and crystal clear. Whether you just explore from the shore or take a boat ride this lake is just so beautiful.

Take the Day trip to North macedonia

Trust me and take the day trip to North Macedonia if you are visiting Tirana, Albania. It is a bit of a long day but so worth it. Ohrid is a beautiful city and after visiting it I would totally come back!
