Five must visit cities in New Zealand

There are so many amazing cities and towns in New Zealand. What we loved the most about New Zealand was getting out of the cities and into the nature but the cities themselves have so much to offer. Whether you are passing through or staying as a jumping off place to other great tourist spots no doubt you will hit some of the cities and you will love them.

Auckland

Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand and often where most travelers first start out upon arrival. Sitting on a harbor and with the skyscraper skyline you will be quite impressed. There is so much to do from fantastic nearby beaches, ferry rides to nearby islands, awesome restaurants, and bars. You do not have to venture far to be in nature whether it is beaches, rainforest, wineries and more. You can easily get around on foot or with local transportation. While here you can check out the SkyTower, Auckland Museum, SeaLife Aquarium, New Zealand Maritime Museum, or the Zoo. It is definitely worth taking the ferry over to Waiheke Island.

queenstown

This impressive city in the south is the home of adrenaline. If you like extreme sports and outdoor activities this is the place for you. Set upon a beautiful lake with mountains all around, you will be in awe of the beauty. It has tons of shopping, restaurants, bars, hiking, skiing, and activities for you to engage in. There are also tons of wineries in this region. It is also the base for many trips to Milford Sound.

Christchurch

Christchurch is the largest on the South Island. It was devastated by earthquakes that have left a portion of the town unlivable. It is like walking through an apocalyptic movie but adorned with incredible street art. Outside of that area there are many beautiful parks. While here you should definitely check out the Cardboard Church, Cathedral Square, Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens.

Rotorua

This city is a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to the hot springs and geysers. Boasting the geothermal activity, you will definitely smell the sulfur in the air. It also has a huge Māori population and is a great place to really dive into the Māori culture. While here you should check out Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, Te Puia, Waikite Valley Thermal Pools, and the Whakarewarewa Forest.

Wellington

Wellington is known as the “windy city” this capital city sits on the southern aspect of the North Island. It has a thriving restaurant and nightlife scene. It is where you can take a ferry between the North and South Island. While here you can check out the New Zealand Parliament, Wellington Cable Car, Museum of New Zealand, and Mount Victoria.
