DIY Craft Travel Push Pin Map

map out your travels

There are so many various different travel bucket list maps where you can put little pins on places you’ve been or places you want to go. It is a really incredible way to showcase all the places you’ve traveled, and is a great conversation starter in your home when you have guests come to visit. Whenever I go to someone’s house that has one of these, I am drawn like a moth to the flame to see where they have been. You can of course buy one of these premade ones or you can do like me and DIY it. It is fairly easy and gives you the freedom of picking your own color scheme or style map. It’s also a fraction of the cost!

Items you need

  • Framed cork board
  • Large poster map
  • Push pins
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Mod Podge (optional)

step by step instructions

Purchase Corkboard and Poster

First, you buy a standard cork board with a frame- mine measured 35 inches by 23 inches. Then you buy a large map of your choosing that will fit onto the size of your corkboard. Most standard posters will be 36x 24 inches. You may have to trim it slightly to fit within the frame so be aware of that when you are purchasing both your corkboard and your map. There are also corkboards of 36 x 24 inches so you wouldn’t need to trim the poster at all. If you do need to trim it to fit the frame, use a ruler and the scissors to make even lines.

Adhere the map to the corkboard

You can elect to either glue or pin the map to the cork board.  You can glue it using Mod Podge by putting a layer of the glue on the cork board and then putting the map on top. Make sure to work out all the air bubbles. Another easier option is to put the map flat and using extra push pins pin the map in place over the corkboard.

pin where you’ve been

Once the map is in place, you can start adding your pins of where you have been and then hang it for all to see! You can color code based on where you have been, where you want to go, different colors for each person in the family, and more. What is extra fun about this art project is that you can take it down and add more pins for every new trip you go on! Trust me everyone will gravitate to this statement piece.
