Iceland is a Nordic island nation  that is part of Europe. It is known for its incredible geothermal activity (volcanos, hot springs, lava fields and geysers). Iceland has become a tourist destination over the past years due to its incredible natural beauty and quaint and beautiful buildings and towns. It should definitely be on your bucket list.

Almost all its travelers visit via airline travel into Keflavík Airport (KEF) which is about 50 km to Reykjavík. From the airport you can get to the main town via bus or by renting your own car.

You can also visit on a stop for a cruise. Adventurous travelers can consider a 2-3 day ferry ride from Denmark to Iceland via the Faroe Islands.

You can easily stay in the town of Reykjavík and take day tours from there to many of the iconic tourist destinations. You can also elect to rent your own car to get around on your own time and stay in various towns along the way of your journey.

Visit Reykjavík

Iceland’s capital city is full of great museums, amazing shops and restaurants, enjoy the nightlife and make it your home base if you are going to do day tours. You can easily stay here without renting a car. While here consider checking out Hallgrimskirkja Church, the Sun Voyager, Harpa Concert Hall, Perlan or the National Museum of Iceland.

The Golden Circle

This iconic route is between three of Iceland’s most visited attractions: Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysir geothermal area and Þingvellir National Park. You can visit on your own pace by renting a car or take a bus tour.

Vík

Vík is located along the southern coast. You can get there via a day tour of the South or rent a car yourself to enjoy the stops along the way and then spend the night in Vík. Must sees on the way include:  Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, Skógafos Waterfall, Sólheimasandur plane crash, Reynisfjara Beach, and Vík itself.

Skaftafell National Park

If you have your rental car you can head from Vík down to the iconic Glacier Lagoon. Along the way you can check out Skaftafell National Park where you can hike to Skaftafellsjökull glacier or Svartifoss waterfall. 

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

If you have your rental car you can head from Vík down to the iconic Glacier Lagoon. This drive is about 2.5 hours but along the way you can check out Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon or the Skaftafell National Park. Once you get to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon depending on the season you can take a boat tour (summer) or meet up for an ice cave tour (winter). Also cross the street to check out Diamond Beach.

Blue Lagoon

Recognized as one of the 25 wonders of the world. The beautiful sky blue lagoon of geothermal seawater with the volcanic backdrop is the perfect place to relax and literally soak it all in. You can purchase packages for a day visit or splurge on spa treatments here. The perfect place to rejuvenate yourself. 

Wildlife Tours

Iceland boasts some incredible and unique wildlife. While here you will definitely get to see the adorable and sturdy Icelandic Horses. Also Iceland is known for great puffin watching and whale watching tours. Whale watching is best done in the summer months. Puffin viewing is best done between May and early August.
