Planning your day trip from Kanab, utah

We did a day trip from Kanab, Utah. I had tried to get us entry into the Wave without success and this was a great back up plan for the day! If we had more time we would have spent a night or two in Page with the abundance of things to do I would recommend that. We will be back for sure. We also traveled here while COVID-19 was still prevalent which meant Antelope Canyon was closed to visitors. The drive with all the stops we wanted to make was 3 hours and 45 minutes and that did not include any of the stops or hikes. We left early in the morning and arrived back to our hotel in Kanab after sunset.

First stop the Toadstool Hoodoos

The Toadstool Hoodoos trail is an easy 1.8 mile out and back trail that is part of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. It is open year round. Dogs are welcome on a leash. It takes about 40 minute to complete. The rock structures resemble mushrooms. It’s the perfect little break on the way to Page.

Next stop Lake Powell

Lake Powell is a beautiful reservoir bordering Utah and Arizona. It is formed by the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. The waters stretch over 180 miles and it is a popular place for boating, fishing, kayaking and more. Rainbow Bridge National Monument can be reached via boat tour on Lake Powell.

Next Stop Glen Canyon Dam

Within Page you can stop at viewpoints of the Glen Canyon Dam Overlook. There is a very short hike down rock carved stairs to the viewpoint.

Lunch

Page is bursting with tons of restaurants and options for food. You can grab quick food to a full meal. Some top restaurants include Birdhouse, Sunset 89, Big John’s Texas BBQ, El Tapatio and Grand Canyon Brewing and Distillery.

Next Stop Horseshoe Bend

Horseshoe bend is an iconic and beautiful stop in the area. It is a part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The red rust cliffs have been carved by the Colorado River which is a stunning green color below. It is a very popular site so visiting early morning or evening can be less crowded and provide better photography light. The hike to the viewpoint is 1.5 miles round-trip. Parking costs $5 for motorcycle and $10 for car or RV. This fee is not part of the NPS.

Next stop the navajo bridge

The Navajo Bridge spans the Colorado River near Marble Canyon. The original bridge was completed in 1929 and served as vital crossing for travelers. Now it is a pedestrian only bridge. It offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Next stop Vermillion Cliffs National Monument

The Vermillion Cliffs National Monument is a breathtaking expanse of rugged wilderness. It is home to famous landmarks of The Wave and Coyote Buttes. To gain access to the Wave you need to get a ticket or win the lottery in Kanab. You can visit parts of the monument without an entry ticket and one is the condor viewing area. This is located down a dirt road off of route 89.

Wrapping up the day

We started our journey back toward Kanab. The drive back was very beautiful as well and we stopped for some golden hour pictures as the sun was going down. It was a jam packed day but was well worth it. No doubt we will be back to this area again!
