Planning your day trip from Phoenix, Arizona

We did a day trip from Phoenix, Arizona. Initially, our plan was to go up to Sedona and spend a night or two but while we were there in February a winter storm came through Sedona so we opted to wait for better weather and crammed it into a day trip. We had been to Sedona before on a trip across the state after visiting the Grand Canyon. It is a bit of driving so the best way to maximize your day is to get to an early start. If you want to hike I highly recommend spending more than just one day.

First stop the Montezuma Castle National Monument

Our first stop was to Montezuma Castle National Monument. This is about 1.5 hour drive (94 miles) from Phoenix. There are two parts to this National Monument the Castle and the Well so make sure to put in the correct directions. The entry fee is $10 per person for Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot which is good for 7 days or is covered if you have the America the Beautiful National Parks Pass. The visitor center and trail is open from 8 AM- 4:45 PM.

Lunch

Cottonwood is a small town between Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot and is the perfect place to grab a bite if the timing is right. This little town also has several shops to explore.

Next stop Tuzigoot National Monument

Tuzigoot National Monument is a citadel with multi-room pueblos being built around year 1000. At this national monument, you can learn about the history and explore artifacts in the museum and then explore the historic site. The entry cost is $10 per person and includes entry to Montezuma Castle or you can use the America the Beautiful Annual Pass. The drive from Montezuma Castle to Tuzigoot is about 35 minutes (23 miles).

Next Stop Sedona

Next we left Tuzigoot National Monument and headed to Sedona. This is about a 40 minute drive (24 miles). During our day visit we stopped at the Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park, Chapel of the Holy Cross and Bell and Courthouse Rock area. Some of the top trailheads require a parking pass or display of the America the Beautiful Card so make sure to have it handy.

Amitabha Stupa and peace park

The Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park is a very unique free little park you can visit in Sedona. This park is dedicated to peace and spirituality. You can take in the serenity of the prayer flags and the tranquil atmosphere surrounded by the red rock desert.

Chapel of the holy cross

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is an iconic landmark in Sedona. It was designed by Marguerite Staude in 1956. This modern design is striking with the red rock landscapes around it. It is free to visit and there is parking looping up around it.

Courthouse and Bell Rock

The Courthouse Butte and Bell Rock Trailhead are off of route 179. These iconic rock formations are some of the favorites while visiting Sedona. The Courthouse Butte Loop is a 4.2 mile easy to moderate loop around both the Courthouse Butte and Bell Rock. You can also walk just a short bit up the trail from parking to get a good view of both.

Wrapping up the day

The journey back to Phoenix was beautiful as the sun was setting. The drive from the trailhead home was about 110 miles and took about 1 hour and 50 minutes. We got back in the dark. It was a long but jammed packed day. It is definitely worth spending a night in Sedona but this itinerary is perfect for those short on time!
