Granada is a city in southern Spain, located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is known for its rich history and cultural heritage, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Granada was once the capital of the Emirate of Granada, which was the last Muslim kingdom in Spain. As a result, the city is home to many important examples of Islamic architecture, including the Alhambra, which is a magnificent palace and fortress complex. Visitors to Granada can explore the city’s beautiful streets and landmarks, as well as enjoy its vibrant culture and delicious food.

Almería Train 2.5 hours, Bus about 2-3 hours.

Getting around

If you take bus into town you will be about 3 km from the area of the cathedral. You can take bus 21 or bus 33 to the bus station which takes around 20 minutes and costs 1.4 euro. You pay the driver on the bus.
If you take the train the walk to cathedral are is about 20 minutes. You can take a local bus or use the metro. If you are staying around the cathedral you would get off at stop and then walk about 12 minutes. The metro does also stop at the bus station.

There are taxis everywhere also. Apparently it costs about 7 euros to get taxi from town to the Alhambra.

Most tourists elect to walk but make sure to be wearing comfortable shoes with a little grip. There are lots of cobblestones and some slippery stones. The Alahambra is up hill and also if you want to go to some viewpoints for sunset expect to head up some slight hills.

Where to stay

There are so many options for accommodation in Granada. El Centro is considered the best place to stay. It is located between the Cathedral and Plaza Nueva. It is about a 20-25 minute walk to Alhambra and has a ton of restaurant options. Other popular areas to stay in Granada include the neighborhoods of Albaicín and Sacromonte, which are known for their lively atmosphere and beautiful views. Albaicín can be a little more hilly but very quaint alleys and neighborhoods with epic views like San Nicolas. Beiro is the area around the train and bus station. This area is great for being near transport but also affordable and offers great nightlife. No matter where you stay you will love this city.

Granada is also known for its delicious food, so be sure to try some of the local dishes, such as pescaito frito and migas.For those with a sweet tooth, the city is also home to a variety of delicious pastries and desserts, including the famous nevaditos, which are small pastries filled with sweet cream. There are so many options for all sorts of international cuisines you will be able to find whatever your cravings desire. 

What to do

Alhambra

The Alhambra is the highlight of Granada. You will be blown away. It makes sense it was up for contention for the new wonders of the world and is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Expect to spend at least half a day here. 

Mirador for sunset

There are many places to watch the sunset and one of the favorites is San Nicolas which gives views of Alhambra. It is pretty busy with loads of people sitting on the walls. There are also two restaurants with views just below as well. People playing music and some little artisan vendors are in this little plaza as well. Other options include San Miguel Alto and San Cristobal.

CATHEDRAL OF GRANADA

Another must-see attraction in Granada is the Cathedral of Granada, which is a stunning example of Gothic architecture.

FLAMENCO 

For a unique cultural experience, visitors can also attend a flamenco show in one of the city’s many traditional tablaos.

OTHER TOP ATTRACTIONS

Other things to do include Sacromonte, Catedral, Monestario San Jergnino, Palacio de Los Cordova and more. There are tons of free walking tours. Many things are free to enter on Sundays if you are around on that day.

Granada is one of the best cities in Spain and for good reason. The Alhambra is simply incredible. This city has so much to offer. It is worth spending several days here if your itinerary allows. Also the highlights can be seen within one day if you are on a tighter schedule. You will not regret it!
